Sherlock holmes & a study in scarlet5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() (Summary by Laurie Anne Walden)Ģ-6 A Continuation of the Reminiscences of John Watson, M.D. In his first adventure, Holmes demonstrates many of the traits for which he later became well known: meticulous study of a crime scene, brilliant deductive reasoning, aptitude for chemistry and music, and the somewhat annoying habit of withholding crucial facts from Watson (and consequently the reader) until the conclusion of the case. John Watson, A Study in Scarlet, Watson himself enumerates. ![]() The action returns to London in the last two chapters. Holmes was well-versed in forensic science before there was a forensic science to be well versed in. In the second half of the story, the scene shifts to Utah as we learn the murderer's history. The crime baffles the Scotland Yard detectives, but of course Holmes solves it easily. The novel is set in the late 19th century, at a time when British imperialism was at its height and when an ideology. Watson meets the detective for the first time and we ride along with them to the scene of a murder.
